How did St Valentine's Day Begin? Here, the man himself tells the real story...or so he claims!
I lived in Rome during the third century under the rule of Emperor Claudius
(The Cruel). The big dope wanted to have a big army, and expected men to volunteer to go
to war. Fat chance! They just wanted to stay at home with their wives and families.
This got right up the Roman's nose and he decided not to allow any more marriages.
I thought it was preposterous...I certainly wasn't going to obey that law.
You see, I was a priest and a favourite activity was to marry couples. Even after Claudius passed his law, I kept on performing marriages ceremonies-secretly, ofcourse.
It was really quite exciting. Imagine a small, candlelit room with only the bride and groom and myself. We would whisper the words of the ceremony,listening all the while for the heavy steps of soldiers.
One night, we did hear footsteps. The couple I was marrying escaped in time, but I was caught and thrown in jail- to wait my death by stoning.
And you know what ? Wonderful things happened. Many young people came to jail to visit me. They threw flowers and notes through my window. They wanted me to know that they,too, believed in love.
One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to visit me in the cell and sometimes we would sit and talk for hours. She agreed that I did the right thing by ignoring the Emperor and going ahead with the secret marriages.
On the day I was to die, I left my friend a note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. I signed it: "LOVE FROM YOUR VALENTINE."
It was written on the day I died, February 14, 269 AD. Now, every year on this day, people remember. But most importantly, they think about the love and friendship.
And when they think of Emperor Claudius, they remember how he tried to stand in the way
of love, and they laugh, because they know that love can't be beaten!

To evol , my dearest love
I remember our trip to the ocean shore,
Your blue eyes glinting in the moon light,
The light shining off your eyes
As we played truth or dare next to the tent .
I felt love for the first time in my life
that night; as we lay down by the seaweed plant.
