I attended the world premiere of "Curse of the Golden Flower" (outside of China) at the AFI film festival in Los Angeles last weekend. I'm not going to divulge much about the plot but my gosh the battle scene at the end was done in such a grand scale unlike anything that I've seen in an asian movie, including Kagemusha. The film was billed as the most expensive ever made in China and quite evidently so.
Directing (Zhang Yimou): very good
Acting (Chow Yun Fat, Gong Li): very good
Cinematography: very good
Costume Design: very good
Set Design: very good
Over all: 4/5 stars

Zhang Yimou, Chow Yun Fat and Gong Li were gracious enough to show up at the party after the screening to talk and take pictures with fans. I thought that was great .
"Curse of the Golden Flower" will be released in theaters on Dec 22. Catch it if you can.
