A rancher decides to enclose a rectangular region by using an existing fence along one side of teh region and 2240 feet of new fence on teh other three sides. The rancher wants the length of the rectangular region to be five times longer than its width. What will be the dimensions of the rectangular region???

If you make the length of the rectangle to be the existing fence, then your dimension would be 1600 by 320.
l=length; w= width
l =5w
1 length is already given there for, the perimeter would be P=2w+l
Which means P=2w+5w (replace lenght with 5w) P=7w=2240 (divide both sides by 7 to get the length of the width) w=320 Since the length is 5 times the width, 5 x 320 = 1600, and that's your length.
To check yourself:
P = 2l + 2w (we will only use 1 length due to the fact that one side is the existed fenc
P = 1600 + 320(2) P = 2240
Hope that helps you sweetie

but that is assuming that "the other 3 sides" have 2 widths + 1 length, if they have 2 lengths + 1 width it would be different yes ?

DiemTình date: 041503 time: 06:21:12 total posts: 121 fishy,
Yes, assuming the existing side is the width, then the answer would be different.
If the existing side is a width, then the perimeter would be
P = 2l + w
l = 5w
P = 10w + w
2240 = 11w
w = 203.63 (approximately
which means the lenght have to be about 1018.18
to check yourself P = 1018.18 x 2 + 203.63 P = 2239.99 which is about 2240 ...
then this one would have the dimension of
1018.18 by 203.63 ... that is roughly speaking
Sao, coi được không fishy????

i had a feeling that it would end up with noninteger numbers
